Mushrooms are rather different from other vegetables - they are a product of fungus - their nourishment is attained from organic matter and they thrive in dark moist places. Typically vegetables use photosynthesis to grow and convert nutrients from the sun. As you can see mushrooms are very different.

In commercially available mushrooms look for those with a firm texture and even colour with tightly-closed caps.
