Member of the rose family. 
Very similar to peaches without the fuzzy skin.
Nectarines have smooth skin that is usually red in colour with golden yellow highlights depending on the variety.
Under the skin is a juicy yellow, white or red flesh surrounding a medium sized seed.

A good nectarine will have a healthy appearance consistent with the variety.
Avoid cut or bruised fruit.
A ripe nectarine will give to gentle pressure.
